WiseManager coming to WarpStock Europe

October 25, 2001 by Kim Cheung

WiseManager coming to WarpStock Europe Five years ago IBM released Workspace on Demand (WSoD). A product which went a long way to extending the benefits associated with diskless, remote booted, server managed clients. And those benefits were significant, especially the lowering of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)associated with such operational expeneses as software deployment and the removal of many points of failure associated with traditional PCs.

However, IBM chose to deliver Workspace on Demand as a service offering which included the product. IBM service contracts were part of the installation. A product review appeared in InfoWorld which was positive about the features, functions and benefits of WSoD, but first had t overcome the issue that two IBM technicians were sent to install and bring the product up.

Now let's jump ahead two years to Warpstock in Atlanta in 1999. Peter Coffee writes of his experiences at Warpstock, "I pushed one button and deployed a network in 29 seconds per node. It was worth my trip to Atlanta to see this fulfillment of the vision of network computing delivered by Serenity Systems' technology based on IBM's OS/2." A polar opposite of the experiences and comments made by InfoWorld regarding
WSoD.

Please join us for a technology demonstration and presentation to show where WiseManager, the object of Peter Coffee's glowing words, is taking the management and remote booting of workstation clients.

There is a significant opportunity for small, medium, and large accounts to enjoy the benefits associated with implementations like WSoD. And this means from peer networks at home, to large networks of mixed workstations and server platforms.

Kim Cheung will be demonstrating features which comprise the direction of WiseManager. At present, WSoD is in its third release and supports NT Server and Win2K Server. But WiseServer functionality is being extended to eCS, OS/2, AS/400, RS6000, and Solaris, all capable of functioning as boot servers using DHCP.

The clients supported in this demonstration include eCS, OS/2, Windows, and Linux. So, users with OS/2 workstations around the home or office can begin to explore the reliability and other benefits associated with remote booting of managed clients. Large accounts with mixed environments and a desire to significantly lower the operational and support costs should notice that this functionality scales up to RS6000.

Please join us to see the functionality coming in the next generation of WiseManager, WiseServer, and WiseClient.
