Anyone looked at the supplied log, CURRENT.CSV, yet?

If "Yes" any idea why OO311 crashes instead of displaying the label applet?

If "No": WHY NOT?

I'm still trying to get this app to work acceptably ie actually be capable of opening the Labels applet to Create a Label.

Just by chance I discovered that if I click on the "Improvement Program" option then a report gets made when the app crashes instead of displaying the Label app.

The report is in %HOME%\OpenOffice.org\3\user\temp\Feedback

The file is named Current.csv

I attach this file as it may help identify whatever the problem is with OO3.1.1

The file contains only 1 crash report and can be opened in the Spreadsheet.

I spent some time this afternoon creating a volume and installing eCS2.0RC6a.

I then installed OO311 and tested whether it was possible to create Labels or Business Cards with this installation on RC6a.

The answer is NO - OPENOFFICE CRASHES IMMEDIATELY.

This tells me there is definitely something wrong with OO3.1.1 for eCS.

No SOFFICE.LOG file is generated.

No entries are generated in POPUPLOG.OS2 as a result of this crash.

As other people using different systems do not have this problem it must be some sort of configuration issue - or, possibly, I do not have some software installed that OO3.1.1 needs to be able to perform the tasks that cause it to crash.

I would be willing to try to discover the cause but have no idea where to start - and from the replies I've had to date nor does the "Support Team".

To say that I am not impressed would be an understatement!

I *do* prefer using eCS to all other operating systems and will not be over happy to switch completely to any other os.

Sadly it is being forced on me by the need for a reasonably good *working* "office" software package. OO3.1.1 on eCS does not meet this requirement due to the problems encountered - and support to rectify this is not forthcoming.

It should be noted that OO3.1.1 works fine with the same hardware using opensuse and also WindowsXP so I doubt there is any hardware problem involved.

That suggests the problems I am seeing with OO3.1.1 are eCS related - either OO3.1.1 has problems or eCS2.0GA which are causing these problems.

Of course, the problems could be some sort of system configuration issue but, as mentioned previously, support has not been of any help with the problems.

Hmmm, Java6 and QT4 will be useful additions to eCS - when they work.

At this point in time QT4 nearly works but obviously has a few problems that need resolving and Java6 is still some way from being vaguely usable.

Yes, I would love to stay with eCS but I need a system that can actually produce rather than a system that I spend a lot of time on trying to get "released" software to work properly.

If support can come up with some suggestions to rectify the OO3.1.1 problems then I will reconsider whether I need to leave eCS.

Hello Pete,

obviously noone is forcing you to purchase anything. Of course using eComStation is a 'battle' compared to mainstream operating systems like Ubuntu or Windows, that is not a fair comparison.

Luckily for some eCS still provides some advantages and they prefer it over other OS-es but often it is not the sole installed system.

We're glad that recently development of several core components has picked up speed and momentum, like Java 6, Qt4, Intel NIC drivers etc. We're in much better shape than say two years ago.

That said, good luck with whichever way you decide to go and thanks for your support over the years.

Well, I'm not going to spend money on a product that probably will not work as expected.

I guess it is time to move over to linux completely - OO3.2 does not have any problems (to date) on the same system running opensuse - and leave eCS to continue providing non-working software to those who want it.

As you noticed, OOo 3.2 has been released. It is unlikely that your problem was fixed though, as no specific changes were made in this area. However, we cannot reproduce it, works 'normally' here.

2GB of memory should definately be enough.

Still no resolution for the problem of OO311 for OS/2 crashing any time I try to create a Label or Business card?

If that is the case I guess it is time to start moving to linux/unix/solaris and ditching eCS.

For whatever reason the Thesus Process menu items are all grayed out, not accessible.

The Thesus package suggested does not work with ecS2.0GA, the Error message is:-

This version of OS/2 is not supported by Thesus3. The Module Table Entry (MTE) is unknown.

I have located Thesus4001 at http://www.os2site.com/sw/util/memory/thes4001.exe - just thought you may want the link.

Now I just need to try and work out how to use Thesus... I'll post the results when I get my head around what is required.

My system has 2Gb RAM.

I have posted about this problem on the eCS Openoffice ng and the few replies I have had are from people not seeing this problem which suggests it is peculiar to my system.

You can use Theseus to determine the used shared (and other) memory. An (old) copy can be found at:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/memory/thes3003.zip

How much physical memory is in the system?

Please note that version 3.2 is upcoming that may resolve some problems too.

I should have asked how I ascertain how much shared memory is available in order to pass the figure onto yourselves.

Hi

I doubt very much that this is a shared memory problem. I have tried running OO311 without any other apps open, just the system bits that load at boot using memory.

No, when OO311 crashes as a result of trying to create Labels or Business Cards there is no popuplog.os2 entry - and no soffice.log file is generated.

No, using the Quickstart feature does NOT rectify the problem.

This is a persistent problem that needs fixing.

Hello Pete,

the crashes can be caused by a lack of shared memory and these type of crashes generally only create a trap entry in \POPUPLOG.OS2

To circumvent these, you can for example use the Quickstart feature, which works by preloading the required DLLs at system start which makes sure there is enough *continuous* memory available, it requires around 80 MB.

It may be worse than OOo 1.5 under Odin, but please note that it is grown a lot since those days and also has definately many features that are very convenient. One important one (to us) is the zoom feature, you can zoom any OOo document by using the zoom button in the lower right corner, this includes zooming spreadsheets into 'full view'. Apart from that is the ability to import MSFT docx and xlsx files, which are now quite common since it is the Office 2007 default format.

Of course, if the older version suits your needs than by all means keep using that!

The problem reported with Labels also applies to creating Business Cards. Any attempt to create a Business Card results in OO311 crashing.

I also had a look at creating a Label via File, New, Templates and Documents, New Document. Yes, OO311 crashed instantly - This applies to Business Cards as well as Labels.

No, there is NO "soffice.log" file generated anywhere.

Talking of Templates and Documents: I clicked File, New, Templates and Documents and was using the "down" key to scroll through the options in the left hand panel. This resulted in an error message when I tried to scroll past "My Documents" to "Samples":-

Error creating a new document: J:\PROGRAMS\OPENOFFICE3\Basis\share\samples\en-US does not exist.

Checking the OO311 directory tree the 1st thing I notice is that J:\PROGRAMS\OPENOFFICE3\Basis\share\samples does not exist so the error message content is correct - but why did that message appear? I had not tried to create any document at that point so there is obviously something not right here.

Overall I must admit to being totally underwhelmed by OO311 and if the above problems cannot be resolved then I need to consider reverting to a more usable version of OO.

OO115 for Windows running via ar5os2.exe works much better than OO311 for OS/2 at this point.

I was pleased to find this included in eCS2.0GA

However I seem to have found some problems...

I had a text document open and clicked on File, New, Labels. Result: OO311 crashed !!!

I restarted OO and went through the "Recovery process" successfully. This process claimed that clicking the "Next" button would display the Reporting Tool. No, it did not, it simply opened the recovered document.

Having now tried several times to create a Label with OO311 crashing at every attempt I guess that it is not possible to create Labels using this software?

Another problem I notice is that scrolling a document can leave text incomplete - the tops of lines can go missing until the document is scrolled again.

I'm not sure if this is a screen redraw problem within OO311 or the result of the software relying on Innotek Font Engine 2.40 - which is more prone to problems than the 2.60 beta.

The read1st.txt states:-

"If you find any bugs, issues, or have other remarks, please provide as many
details as possible and attach the soffice.log file created at every OOo2
crash: this file is located into your OpenOffice.org.3\program\
directory."

Obviously this is another bit of OO311 not working as expected as there is no "soffice.log file created at every OOo2
crash" - having had several crashes when trying to create a Label there is no soffice.log file anywhere on my system.
